A talk with 94-year-old watercolorist Arthur E. Smith. Born in Buffalo in 1917, Smith attended Kenmore High School and the School of Fine Arts at Buffalo Fine Arts Academy where he studied commercial design. He received his bachelors of science degree in art education from Buffalo State College in 1939. Smith's paintings, depicting locales throughout the United States and Mexico, are characterized by their precision, clarity, and attention to detail. Smith sat down with Artvoice's Anthony Chase last week at the Burchfield Penney Art Center on Buffalo State College's campus—where his watercolor paintings were recently displayed—to discuss his life and career in Buffalo and beyond.
