Buffalo has over 2,000 Burmese people living here. On Saturday, June 20, dozens of Burmese came to Bidwell Parkway to celebrate the 64th birthday of imprisoned political activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Ms. Suu Kyi’s father negotiated Burma’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, but he was assassinated by his rivals in the same year.
In 1990 Dr. Suu Kyi was elected Prime Minister of Burma but the military junta nullified the election and put her under arrest. Nineteen years later she is still under arrest and is currently in a prison notorious for its cruel treatment of political prisoners.
