West African drummer and dancer Alassane Sarr, who now lives in Buffalo, tore it up with a coterie of drummers, dancers and other musicians at Nietzsche's on Sat. Aug 30. Alassane comes from Dakar in Senagal and performs traditional West African music. This is World Beat at its best and its unusual to find such authenticity in Buffalo. Alassane trained at the School of Art in Dakar before going on to become a principal dancer in Senegal's Silimbo Dance Company. When the company traveled to the States in 1991, Sarr remained in the US to perform and teach. He currently teaches West African dance and drumming, Senegalese history, drum-making, leather jewelry making, and costume design.
