Public Enemies
In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.” However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Food Inc.
In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising — and often shocking truths — about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Studio Arena Requests Switch to Chapter 7 Bankruptcy
In a letter dated June 19, 2009, creditors of Studio Arena Theatre were notified by Buffalo bankruptcy court that the struggling institution has requested to change its filing from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Under Chapter 11, a restructuring bankruptcy, the theater had hoped that fundraising and reorganization under court supervision with protection from creditors would allow it to reopen. Chapter 7, or liquidation bankruptcy, effectively puts an end to that dream. In the final analysis, the financial situation was simply too dire. Studio Arena originally announced its intention to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2008. Assets of Studio Arena Theatre include the building itself, which is heavily mortgaged. An effort last year to change ownership of the structure to the Studio Arena Foundation was not allowed by the bankruptcy court. It is likely that local leaders, including banks, will focus on protecting the Studio Arena building so that it can continue to be a cultural asset to the City of Buffalo and the Western New York region in some other form. In that regard, it is also likely that overtures made to Shea's Performing Arts Center and Buffalo State College last year, which were met with caution at that time, will be revisited as plans are made for the facility, located at 710 Main Street.
